Sunday Brunch: District Belfast

Brunch is by far my favourite meal. It's probably mainly because it signals the weekend and a little down time but also because I bloody love a good breakfast. At any time of the day, really. I've even been known to have the odd brinner (that's breakfast for dinner, if you didn't know).

We're always on the look out for new brunch spots, so when I was told about this new place, District Belfast on the Ormeau Road (thanks, Elaine Hill), I decided we should give it a try.

The small space has been thoughtfully refurbed and is a clean, open space with a contemporary decor. Careful thought has been paid to the lighting and ambience and the staff are great too.

The menu features a great range of healthy choices, which to someone on Slimming World, is a real bonus. I opted for the sweetcorn and coriander fritter with spicy black beans and a poached egg, with added smoked bacon (I'm not a saint, after all).

I wasn't sure what to expect from the black beans but they were gorgeous and really well seasoned and complemented the rest of the dish really well. I'd find it hard to look past this if I went back again.

Dom chose the bagel with sausages and poached eggs. Judging from the rather glowing Instagram post that followed, I think he enjoyed it.

We each ordered an Americano. They have a strong coffee game here and I felt afterwards I should probably have asked them for more information on the various blends but we thoroughly enjoyed whichever deep bodied variety they served up.

I was also impressed by their milk selection. That might sound like a strange comment but due to the aforementioned Slimming World membership, I'm opting for almond milk or black coffee these days - it was nice to have a non dairy option other than soya milk (sorry, I just can't do it) on a cafe menu.

If I had one small piece of feedback, it's that the tables are a little close together but it certainly wouldn't stop me returning; in fact I'm very much looking forward to another brunch date here soon.

I also spotted Dillon Bass Irish whiskey ambassador, Joe Magowan there too - he knows his coffee as well as his whiskey, so that tells me that we were in the right place.
