Fringe Benefits

Fringes and I don’t have a great track record. See Exhibit A. ▼▼▼

Exhibit A: My Tragic Fringes (and poses) - In Pictures

As a child, my hair was curly and unruly and having a fringe just made matters worse. One time, when my mum had gone to visit her sister in Australia, my dad, charged with looking after us, somehow managed to get a hairbrush stuck in my hair. I ended up with an asymmetric fringe after the brush had to be cut out of my tangled locks. That still haunts me.

Thankfully, my hair has been tamed a little. Or I’ve grown into it. But I’ve still had my fair share of bad dos.

That is, until I found my hairdresser, Carrie. She first convinced me to cut my hair up into a graduated bob about five years ago. And I’ve trusted her judgement ever since.

At that time, I was sporting what my mother called my ‘witch’ look, as my hair was so long (we’re talking mid back length here), jet black from a build-up of dye and frizzy as hell.

So, when I went for my regular re-style last weekend and said to her, ‘I’ve been thinking about getting a fringe,’ I awaited her opinion, watching her reaction in the mirror. I thought she would say, ‘no, Sinead, I really don’t think that will work on you.’ Instead, she was excited and said we should go for it. So we did.

Almost a week later, it’s still taking a lot of getting used to, but I love it. It’s a change and as I’m losing weight, I just find that I want to mix things up a little.

Here’s what I’ve learned since going for the chop:

1.  I’ve never noticed the temperature of my forehead before but having a fringe at this time of year can be a blessing; it’s like the effect of wearing a woolly hat pulled down over your face.

2.  The morning fringe is a sight of pure horror.

3.  Fringes take ‘training’, apparently. I definitely need more practice with the oul blow dry technique before I nail this thing.

4.  Bad eyebrow day? It doesn’t matter; no one can see them. I’m going to save a fortune on brow products.

5.  You don’t really have to bother with foundation on your forehead, but eye make-up is another thing. With a large portion of my face covered, I feel like I have to make more of an effort with my eye make-up. Twice already this week my eyes have been streaming thanks to an eyeliner incident.

6.  Gusts of wind are not your friend with a fringe.

7.  It’s been dry since I had the chop but I am not looking forward to the first drops of rain with this do…

Carrie really is a genius by the way. Find her here.
